FAQs

Does “The Soto Six” always have six musicians in the band?

The band does not always perform with six musicians. How many musicians are performing with us at any given event depends on a variety of factors (including budget, type of event, venue, and more). When we are performing with less than six musicians, we will typically denote this in event listings (e.g. when performing as a quartet, we bill ourselves as “The Soto Six (minus two)”, and so on). We are flexible in this regard, and we can modify instrumentation/amount of personnel depending on the needs of any given event/venue!

What type of music do you perform? What if I don’t like jazz?

We are a jazz band, but we are versatile and experienced in all types of jazz and jazz-adjacent music. Some of these genres include (but are not limited to) swing, hard bop, bossa nova, fusion, funk, jazz-rock, bebop and more. We are passionate about jazz, and we do our best to connect with audiences of all backgrounds and tastes in music. Even if you think that you don’t like jazz, we are sure that there is something we do that you would enjoy!

What is the difference between the “Aztec Jazz Jam” and the “Frankie’s Jazz Jam”?

We are very fortunate to be able to host two separate jazz jam sessions in North County San Diego. The Aztec Jazz Jam takes place every 1st & 3rd Sunday of the month at Aztec Brewery in Vista, CA whereas the Frankie’s Jazz Jam takes place every last Sunday of the month at Frankie’s in Oceanside, CA. Both sessions run 6-9PM and are welcoming to all musicians of all walks of life. The only distinction between these jam sessions (aside from venue) is that the Frankie’s jam is 21+ while the Aztec jam is all ages. Musicians - please bring your axe and join in the fun and jam with us!
